Abstract

Methodology: A hospital based cross-sectional study design was employed. Seventy patients were included using the consecutive sampling technique. Data were collected using pretested structured questionnaire to get demographic data, co morbidities and history of asthma; entered into Statistical package for Social Sciences version 23 software for analysis. Crude and adjusted odds ratio with 95% CI was calculated to determine the strength of association between response and predictable variables. P-value less than 0.05 were considered as a level of significance.  Descriptive analysis was used to see the magnitude of uncontrolled asthma and bivariate and multivariate regression was used to see association between the dependent and independent variables.
Result: Using the Global Initiative for Asthma criteria, 40% of patients had uncontrolled asthma. The study participants mean age was 45 years, with 56% female. Ninety-three percent of patients started on controller treatment. Factors independently associated with uncontrolled asthma were family history (AOR= 4.71, 95% CI: 1.028-21.5) and poor inhaler technique (AOR= 6.6, 95% CI: 1.14- 38).
Conclusion: A large proportion of patients have inadequate control of asthma and, family history of asthma and poor inhaler technique has significant association with uncontrolled asthma.
Recommendation: Patients education about asthma control and proper inhaler techniques is recommended
