Author Guidelines

Authors are invited to make a submission to this journal. All submissions will be assessed by an editor to determine whether they meet the aims and scope of this journal. Those considered to be a good fit will be sent for peer review before determining whether they will be accepted or rejected.

Before making a submission, authors are responsible for obtaining permission to publish any material included with the submission, such as photos, documents and datasets. All authors identified on the submission must consent to be identified as an author. Where appropriate, research should be approved by an appropriate ethics committee in accordance with the legal requirements of the study's country.

An editor may desk reject a submission if it does not meet minimum standards of quality. Before submitting, please ensure that the study design and research argument are structured and articulated properly. The title should be concise and the abstract should be able to stand on its own. This will increase the likelihood of reviewers agreeing to review the paper. When you're satisfied that your submission meets this standard, please follow the checklist below to prepare your submission.

AUTHOR’S GUIDELINE

  1. 1. AIM AND SCOPE

Ethiopian Journal of Gender Research (EJGR) is an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed academic journal published by the Institute of Environment, Gender and Development Studies (hereafter IEGDS or Institute) at Mekelle University. This document is a guide to author guide for the Ethiopian Journal of Gender Research (EJGR) with the main objective of achieving clarity and consistency during manuscript submission and the publication process. It includes editorial guidelines that will be useful to reviewers, proof readers and authors as they prepare manuscripts for submission.

The efficiency and effectiveness of the editorial review process is critically dependent upon the actions of both the authors submitting papers and the reviewers. Authors accept the responsibility of preparing research papers at a level suitable for evaluation by independent reviewers. Such preparation, therefore, should include subjecting the manuscript to critique by colleagues and others and revising it accordingly prior to submission. The review process is not to be used as a means of obtaining feedback at early stages of developing the research. Reviewers and editors are responsible for providing constructive and prompt evaluations of submitted research papers based on the significance of their contribution and on the rigor of analysis and presentation.

  1. SUBMISSION PROCEDURES
  2. Manuscripts for submission must be original and not, wholly nor partly, previously published, nor under consideration for publication by another journal.
  3. There should be no identifying material contained in the manuscript or supporting materials whatsoever, apart from any which may be contained in a cover page. Information such as the author(s)’ name, professional and email address, and the same for any co-author(s) must be provided only in the cover page.
  4. All manuscripts must be submitted electronically via the email address of the journal office (mu-ejgr@mu.edu.et).

  1. 3. MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION

3.1. Format

  1. All manuscripts should be formatted in Times New Roman font Style (1.5-spaced, 12-point font size), try to avoid special symbols, or use only symbols available in the Bookman Old Style font.
  2. Margins should be at least 2-2.5 cm margins from top, bottom, and sides.
  3. Manuscripts should be as concise as the subject and research method permit, generally not to exceed 7,000 words.
  4. All pages of the manuscripts should be numbered for easy reference and should be written Open Office, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file formats
  5. To promote anonymous review, authors should not identify themselves directly or indirectly in their papers or in experimental test instruments included with the submission.
  6. A cover page should show the title of the paper, corresponding and co-authors’ names, titles and affiliations, and email addresses.
  7. The EJGR urges use of gender-sensitive language in its publications.
  8. Headings should be arranged so that major headings are centered, bold, and capitalized. Second-level headings should be flush left, both uppercase and lowercase. Third-level headings should be flush left, bold, italic, bold, and both uppercase and lowercase. Headings and subheadings should not be numbered.
  9. Limit italics to such standard uses as journal titles, foreign words (including words in Ethiopian languages), and transliterations.
  10. Quotations should be enclosed with single quote marks, or with double marks for quotes within quotes. Quotations of eight or more typewritten lines in any language will be printed as a separate, indented paragraph and in type smaller than that used in the body of the article. Such quotations should be indented.

3.2. Title

A title should be brief and informative within the word limit for titles 10 to 12 words (not counting “and,” “of,” and similar conjunctions and prepositions).

3.3. Abstract

  1. Manuscripts without appropriate abstracts will not be accepted.
  2. An Abstract of about 250 maximum words should be presented on a separate page immediately preceding the text. The Abstract should concisely inform the reader of the manuscript’s topic, its methods, and its findings.
  3. At the end of the abstract, provide key words of no more than five terms or concepts that reflect the essential content and message of the article; and shall be different from the words written in the title of the manuscript.

3.4. Introduction

The text of the paper should start with a section labeled ‘‘Introduction’’ which provides more details about the paper’s purpose, motivation, methodology, and findings. Both the Abstract and the Introduction should be relatively nontechnical, yet clear enough for an informed reader to understand the manuscript’s contribution.

In addition to the above stated headers, this journal highly recommends the use of the following headers: Materials and Methods/Methodology/Model, Results and Discussion, conclusions, and References.

  1. STYLE

Before an article is accepted in final form, it must follow the stylistic guidelines below.

4.1. Tables and Figures

  1. Keep tables as simple as possible. Captions should be short and explicit. Number tables in a separate sequence from the figures. Prepare all tables in Microsoft Word.
  2. All tabular materials, flow charts, etc. should be typed with the same size and fonts as the text and should be intelligible without reference to the text.
  3. Photographs should be provided in jpeg-format with high contrast (300 pixels).
  4. Headings should be concise, and clearly present the subject matter. Footnotes/explanations to the tables, figures and photos should be placed below. Graphs, diagrams, drawings and photographs are considered figures. Avoid any unnecessary use of colours.

  1. DOCUMENTATION

5.1. Citations

EJGR uses any internationally recognized standards of writing manuscripts (like Harvard, APA, and Chicago style of writing…), but it should have consistency in using of reference styles. For example, if the author uses the Harvard style it must be having author name, year and page of documentation in the text. Cited works must correspond to the list of works listed in the ‘‘References’’ section. Text citations are incorporated, in parentheses, within the body of the article, citing the work by author's last name; year of publication and the specific pages.

  1. In the text, works are cited as follows: author’s last name and year, without comma, in parentheses. For example: one author, (Tewelde, 2003,45); two authors, (Tewelde and Girmanesh, 2003,56); three  or more authors, (Mesele, et al. 2013,89); more than one work cited, (Tewelde and Girmanesh, 2016,123; Belay, 2015,5; Tsegereda,2003,303); with two works by the same author(s), (Tsegereda, 2003, 2005,13(23)).
  2. When the reference list contains two or more works by the same author published in the same year, the suffix a, b, etc., is added to the date in the within-text citations and in the ‘‘References’’ section. For example, (Girmanesh, 2004a, 2004b, 2004c…)
  3. When the author’s name is mentioned in the text, it need not be repeated in the citation. For example: ‘‘Mesele et al. (2005, 345) provide ...’’
  4. Citations to institutional works should use acronyms or short titles where practicable. For example: (WHO, 2012, 456)
  5. If the paper refers to statutes, legal treatises, or court cases, citations acceptable in law reviews should be used.
  6. When needed for making substantive points submit all notes in the form of endnotes. Footnotes are not allowed in this journal. Cite endnotes in the text with a superscript number and list them, double-spaced, at the end of the text and before the references. Do not list notes at the bottom of the page. A note is not a reference but may refer to one.

5.2. Reference List

  1. Every manuscript must include a ‘‘References’’ section that contains only those works cited within the text arranged alphabetically by author’s name.
  2. Each entry should contain all information necessary for unambiguous identification of the published work. Use the following formats:
  3. a) Arrange citations in alphabetical order according to the surname of the first author or the name of the institution or body responsible for the published work.
  4. b) Author of the work, by last name and initials and Date of publication follows the author’s (authors’) name(s).
  5. c) For two or more authors, separate authors with a comma, including a comma before ‘‘and’’ (Tewelde, G., Meselle, A. , and Girmanesh, A.)
  6. d) When more than one work by an author is included, arrange the entries chronologically, oldest date first; for more than one entry by an author(s) in a single year, arrange the entries alphabetically and modify the year citation with a, b, c, etc., as needed.
  7. e) Write the complete title (including subtitle) of the work. Do not use quotation or abbreviations. Italicize the titles of books and journals.
  8. f) For resource materials that were only available online, please include a “last accessed” date.

  1. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

At the end of the manuscript the author should acknowledge briefly:

  1. Contributions that need acknowledging but do not justify authorship;
  2. Acknowledgements of technical help;
  3. Acknowledgements of financial and material support, specifying the nature of support, and
  4. Study subjects and others who contributed in the design, data collection, and analysis phases of the study

  1. DECLARATION OF CONFLICT OF INTEREST
